This is an in-depth course exploring all aspects of soft
ground etching and its combination with aquatint, chine colle and drawing.
Students will learn about line and tone etching, shape and texture transfer,
and aquatint manipulation. Turn your drawings and ideas into beautiful works on
paper. Great for beginners and experienced printers.

An accessible introduction to the versatile intaglio process, with a focus on hands-on learning and experimentation. The class will cover all aspects of etching, from plate preparation to final presentation of an edition of prints. Topics covered include hard ground, soft ground, sugar-lift, deep etching, aquatint, and chine colle.Enrollment is limited to 7 students
Theodora Varnay Jones received her BFA and MFA from The Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest, Hungary. Her prints have received numerous awards from museums, universities and other institutions throughout the US, Europe, Asia, and South America. She has recently exhibited at Fresno Art Museum, Don Soker Gallery, Seattle Art Museum Gallery, and SFMOMA Artists Gallery. She has lectured and taught at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Kyoto Seika University in Japan, and at UC Davis. www.donsokergallery.com

The interrelated pieces of the installation are structures
constructed of discarded objects from
the research laboratories of Novartis, images
of these individual objects and their sections, and images from breast cancer research conducted at UCSF.
Each piece draws on one of its elements as the resource
for the others.
In a row, successive translucent and opaque objects are stacked on top of each other
creating layers through which the video images radiate from the bottom.
The tension created this way is between the layers,
between clarity and obscurity, between object (material) and image (optical appearance). While the objects
provide a solid, static structure the images
are pulsating, changing and moving forward.
Neither the objects nor images have been altered or
manipulated from their original states, but rather, systematically and
deliberately combined into a new whole.
